Bank History

Early in the spring of 1909, a group of local farmers and merchants organized a movement to establish a bank in the town known then as Stanleyton. Their efforts paid off and on December 3, 1909, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Inc. of Stanleyton opened for business with ten thousand dollars in capital stock.

Our independent, locally owned bank has a long and proud history. Throughout the years we have been honored with a dedicated board of directors, hardworking employees, and above all, a loyal community of citizens for over 100 years.

On February 28, 1984, Page Bankshares, Inc., the holding company for then Farmers & Merchants National Bank of Stanley, was formed. In November of 1993, we changed our charter to a state bank, and we became Farmers & Merchants Bank of Stanley. On April 1, 1999 the name of the bank changed to Pioneer Bank and the holding company became Pioneer Bankshares, Inc.

We provide a broad range of banking activities and products. Our loan portfolio gives major emphasis to real estate, consumer, small business, commercial and farming interests. Local schools, volunteer service organizations, and community groups continue to receive financial support from our institution.

Pioneer Bank has locations in Stanley, Shenandoah, Luray, Harrisonburg, Stanardsville, Ruckersville, and Charlottesville. All locations are full-service banking facilities with a knowledgeable staff, ready to assist you with all of your financial needs. Pioneer Bank also owns and operates Valley Finance Service in Harrisonburg. That office is a division of Pioneer Bank that offers small dollar consumer loans.

Our goal is to remain an independent, community owned institution; large enough to serve you yet small enough to know your name. As technology advances in the banking industry and the financial landscape changes, we take pride in providing quality personal services to a growing and diverse customer base.

Convenience, quality service, commitment, kindness and respect are the attributes our customers deserve. It is our goal to continue providing these and other enhanced services for our customers, and the communities we serve long into the future.
